Combined Heat & Power Systems
Combined Heat & Power (CHP) also referred to as cogeneration is the simultaneous generation of electricity and heat energy from a single fuel source thus increasing the overall thermal efficiency of the plant.
Despite all the efforts being made in increasing the efficiency of thermal power plants (diesel&, gasoline engines, gas turbines, steam turbines); plants efficiencies are still in the region of 30% to 50% (in simple cycle state). This implies that about 50% to 80% of the fuel inputs are unused and given out to the atmosphere as waste heat. This waste heat contains significant amount of energy that if harnessed can increase the overall efficiency of the plant.
With the frequent power interruptions in Nigeria (some African countries inclusive), most businesses depends significantly on off grid power (i.e. self-generated power) with fuel cost taking a large chunk of their total operating cost. It therefore becomes important to optimize the efficiency of these power plants.
CHP systems offer a very effective solution in recovering most of this energy lost as waste heat from the exhaust of these power plants.
The key components of a CHP system are an internal combustion engine driving an electric generator and a heat exchanger. The internal combustion engine spins the electric generator to produce electricity; while the waste heat from the exhaust is captured by the heat exchanger which can be used for heating, cooling, dehumidification or other process applications
